MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) Actor Johnny Delgado died Thursday of complications from lymphoma. He was 61.

"Daddy put up a good fight. He didn't want to leave his family,” said his daughter, actress Ina Feleo.

Delgado, Juan Marasigan Feleo in real life, died at his home in Quezon City with his wife, actress-filmmaker Laurice Guillen, daughters Anna and Ina, and his closest friends by his side.

“Daddy was a very religious man. His faith kept him strong. We told him not to worry about us and to just rest. We didn't want him to suffer anymore so we asked him to simply let go,” Feleo said in a phone interview.

Delgado's cancer was diagnosed in 2008. He underwent eight cycles of chemotherapy.

He had an operation in August because of perforations in his intestines, "one of the side effects of chemo,” Feleo explained. He was too weak to stand another round of chemo.

On Nov. 15, Delgado was taken to the St. Luke's Medical Center after he vomited blood. “He left the hospital two days later. Daddy said he just wanted to go home,” Feleo said.

Delgado, the son of film director Ben Feleo and educator Victorina Marasigan, appeared in almost 60 films and TV series in his over four decades in show business. In 2004, Delgado wrote and acted in the dramatic movie “Santa Santita,” which Guillen directed.

Delgado's last project was the short feature “Labing Labing,” which Feleo wrote and directed. He teamed up with Guillen, playing a married couple in the film.

Delgado's wake is at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine in New Manila, Quezon City. Interment will be at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina on Nov. 24.
Our condolences to his family and wife Laurice Guillen. Johnny Delgado’s death is certainly a big loss for the showbiz industry in the country.

Zaijan Jaranilla PhotoHere's another soap opera from ABS-CBN that I'm beginning to love. A television series on hope and faith starred by a seven year old new child actor Zaijan Jaranilla. This is the first big role of Zaijan Jaranilla who recently played "Tony" on ABS-CBN's "Komiks Presents: Mars Ravelo's Tiny Tony." He's also seen in Goin' Bulilit.

"May Bukas Pa" is being aired after T.V. Patrol. The story is so touching and inspirational.I can say that Zaijan fits well for the character of Santino who'll turn to be a miracle boy.

May Bukas Pa Poster
I like the acting of Zaijan and I'm watching May Bukas Pa every night, at his young age he knows already how to touch his audience heart by his acting, he's so innocent and he plays the role well. Good job Zaijan!!!

Christian Bautista may have been left holding straws after losing in the ABS-CBN Star in a Million tilt, but the charming 23-year old tenor has spun his losses into gold, and double-platinum material. A hugely successful self-titled debut album, three power ballad singles and lovelorn music videos, and countless TV appearances later, Christian has emerged as the Philippine’s favorite swoon-worthy heartthrob.

Now that he has conquered an entire archipelago, Christian’s crooning his way into Indonesia, and even Malaysia, 20,000 school girls at a time. During his four-day stay in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta last November, Christian was besieged non-stop by requests for autographs, pictures, magazine photo shoots, and music video tapings, on top of being one of the main highlights at Indonesia’s annual Señoritar festival. The response at Señoritar was astounding, as an entire arena sang along to Christian’s renditions of “The Way You Look at Me,” “Hands to Heaven,” “Away from You,” and Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.”

Prior to his arrival in Jakarta, Christian’s single, “The Way You Look At Me” has already dominated Indonesia’s airwaves for six weeks. “Everybody here seems to know the song by heart,” exclaims a Warner Music Indonesia’s executive (interviewed by Ricky Lo for his Philippine Star Fanfare column). Christian himself is bowled over by the star treatment he received, “I am really honored and privileged to know that my songs are doing well in Indonesia,” he says.

Warner Music Philippines managing director Ricky Ilacad attributes Christian’s success to his lover boy appeal. “Indonesia is not so different from the Philippines, they’re also into love songs,” he explains. “Christian is doing love songs, which is universal, appeal niya maganda, and he has a good command of English. I think that sets him apart. Indonesia’s looking at Christian as a local priority on a long-term basis. He’ll truly have a big day in Indonesia.”

While Christian’s all set to become Asia’s newest male pop idol, back home, he’s readying another heart-piercing assault on the Pinoy masses with his latest single, “Kailan Pa Ma’y Ikaw.” This will be Christian’s first Filipino ballad, and you can be sure he’ll be conquering hearts and charts yet again with this amazing vernacular number.

“Kailan Pa Ma’y Ikaw,” “The Way You Look at Me,” “Hands to Heaven,” and “Colour Everywhere” are included in Christian’s eponymous debut. The double-platinum selling album is distributed by Warner Music Philippines and is available in leading music stores and record bars.

Philippine Star - It started as blind items in the tabs, referring to “a singer-actor TV host confined at the ICU” of an unnamed hospital. Yes, the “singer-actor TV host” being referred to is Francis Magalona who has been conspicuously absent from Eat, Bulaga! for several days now.

Photo by Mari Arquiza via Flickr

Yesterday on 24 Oras in a phone-patch with Chika Minute host Pia Guanio, Francis’ wife Pia Arroyo confirmed that Francis has been diagnosed to have leukemia and is confined at the ICU of a hospital in Pasig City.

But he’s not unconscious, contrary to rumors.

“He’s in high spirits,” said Malou Choa-Fagar, vice president of TAPE, Inc., producer of Eat, Bulaga!, “and he’s raring to go back to Eat, Bulaga!”

Francis is suffering from a treatable type of leukemia, the same one Hollywood actor Ryan O’Neal is a survivor of.

A few months ago when the Eat, Bulaga! guys mounted a show in Las Vegas, Francis reportedly suffered from fever in the afternoons (a bad symptom, according to doctors) coupled with “dizzy spells,” turning pale in the process.

“Rudy (Fernandez) experienced the same afternoon-fever symptoms, so you better see a doctor,” somebody advised Francis.

So Francis did. His and wife Pia’s worst fears were confirmed. (The couple has eight children.) Francis is the son of ’50s showbiz royal couple Pancho Magalona (who died from complications of emphysema) and Tita Duran (who died from complications of a kidney ailment).

Yes, what’s in the blog is true: Francis needs Type O blood (paging Tita Rosa Rosal, head of the Philippine National Red Cross!). Donors are welcome.

Funfare is requesting its readers to pray for Francis’ speedy recovery. Remember, as the poet said, more things are wrought by prayers than this world dreams of. Prayer can move mountains.

Meanwhile, stay tuned to Eat, Bulaga! today. Host Vic Sotto will make an “important announcement.”

Funfare’s Toronto-based “international correspondent” Ferdinand Lapuz has two good news:

1. Brillante “Dante” Mendoza’s Foster Child won the NETPAC Award at the 17th Brisbane International Film Festival held in Australia from July 31 to Aug. 10. Last month, the same film won Best Film and Best Actress (for Cherrie Pie Picache) at the Durban International Film Festival. It was Cherrie Pie’s second Best Actress award from Durban, following last year’s (for Kaleldo). Foster Child also won Best Film at the New Delhi Filmfest last year.

It’s Dante’s third NETPAC award. He has previously won in Jeonju for Kaleldo in 2007 and for Tirador in Singapore early this year. It’s his second award from Brisbane, after Masahista which won the Interfaith Jury award in 2006.

Produced by Robbie Tan’s Seiko Films and written by Ralston Joel Jover, Foster Child is represented by Ignatius Films in Canada.

2. Serbis, also by Dante, has been officially invited to the 46th New York Film Festival from Sept. 26 to Oct. 2. It’s the first Filipino feature film to be accorded that honor by the NYFF.

Distribution rights (in the US) to Serbis, which had its world premiere in the Competition Section of the Cannes Film Festival last May, has been acquired by Regent Entertainment. According to Regent agent Fortissimo Films, Regent is planning a fall theatrical release. Serbis is Regent’s first US acquisition of a Filipino film in several years.

After Cannes, Serbis was acquired for distribution in Greece, Israel, Thailand and Benelux. French co-producer Swift Productions will handle the theatrical release under its Equinox distribution. There’s also pending negotiations with Maximum for the Canadian rights.

Written by Armando “Bing” Lao and starring Gina Pareño, Jaclyn Jose, Julio Diaz, Coco Martin and Kristoffer King, and introducing Mercedes Cabral and Roxanne Jordan, Serbis was also screened in the Rome Asian Filmfest and Jerusalem Filmfest. It has been invited to filmfests in Toronto, Vladivostok (competition category), Pusan, Rio de Janeiro, Thessaloniki and Vancouver.

Clint Eastwood’s provocative drama Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie as a single mother in 1928 Los Angeles who returns home to find her nine-year-old son missing, will open the New York Filmfest. Closing film is Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler.
